How We Actually Pick What Goes On Our Shelves
We get asked a lot why we don’t carry certain brands — the ones you’d find at any big box store. Short answer: we already looked at them, and they didn’t make the cut. Here’s the actual filter every product goes through before it earns shelf space.
Rule one: would we feed or use it on our own dog?
Not “would it sell.” Not “is it popular.” Would we personally feed it, or wash our dog with it, or hand it to our dog to chew on. If the answer’s no, it’s a no for the shelf too, no matter how well it moves at other stores.
What we’re actually checking
Ingredient sourcing — where it’s made, and whether the company will actually tell us
Recall history — a clean track record matters more to us than a flashy label
Whether the packaging oversells the product (a lot of it does)
How it performs in real Chattanooga households — we ask our regulars, and we listen
Why hand-curated beats “wide selection”
Big box stores stock hundreds of options because more SKUs means more sales, not because more SKUs means better choices for your dog. We’d rather carry forty things we’ve actually vetted than four hundred things nobody on our team could explain to you.
That’s also why our staff can answer real questions about what’s on the shelf — grain-free versus limited-ingredient, raw versus freeze-dried, what actually helps with itchy skin versus what just claims to. We’re not reading you a label. We know the products.
The Raw Bar is the clearest example
Every unusual item behind our Raw Bar counter — the kind of stuff you won’t find at a chain — got there because it’s a single, honest ingredient with nothing added. Not because it’s trendy. We’ll dig into exactly what’s back there in an upcoming post.
Not sure what’s right for your dog? Come in and ask — that’s what we’re for. We’re Chattanooga’s go-to pet bakery for a reason, and it’s not the size of the shelf.
